Whatever your skill level you can make the most of the Sunshine Coast's many cycling routes. The more you practice, the better you'll get and the more comfortable you will feel in the saddle. Even a short ride to the shops can be enjoyable! If you are new to cycling or not a confident rider then we recommend you use our extensive off-road pathway network to get around. Remember, cycling is permitted on all off-road pathways unless sign posted otherwise. Cycling is not permitted on the Sunshine Motorway and sections of the Bruce Highway.

Bicycle safety and the rules

If you are riding on the road or the pathway, you must follow appropriate rules and guidelines to keep you and other safe. For more information on riding safely, go to our Cycle safety page: https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Experience-Sunshine-Coast/Pathways-tracks-and-trails/Cycling/Safety.

Bicycle selection and maintenance

Choosing the right bike for you and maintaining your bicycle is very important. The best bike for you will depend on the type of riding you plan to do. Your bike shop can help you choose the best bike for the type of cycling you want to do and the correct bike size so you can handle your bike safely. It's important that you make sure your seat height is set correctly and you are comfortable in your riding position to maintain proper control.

Check list:

  • your brakes are working
  • the bell is loud enough
  • the handle bars are easy to reach
  • the bike chain is clean and oiled
  • the wheels turn smoothly
  • your pedals are tight
  • the seat is level and
  • the tyres are pumped and firm.
